Welcome to part two of this purpose series. In part one, I provided a simpler definition for purpose and I discussed three things that could be blocking your clarity making it difficult to discover your purpose. Part two is all about practical steps to finding your purpose. Right away I want to demystify this for you.
Believe it or not, everybody has the same purpose. You’re probably like “What you talking about Johanna?” (in my Arnold Jackson voice, IYKYK…)
Hang in there with me because I believe this will be a huge relief for you.
Yes I’ve concluded that everyone has the same purpose. And that purpose is to be God’s goodness in the earth and if you’d rather remove God from the equation, then your purpose is to do good. Leave this world better than you found it.
Now how did I draw this conclusion? When listening to conversations from professors that teach happiness, a common thread is that people want to know that their lives have meaning. As we age, we become more reflective and legacy minded. When people are nearing the end of life, they want to leave this earth knowing that they made an impact for the better…that they’ve done good. If they haven’t done that, then there’s this mad dash at the end to sure that up.
Now I know words like impact, legacy, meaning or saying ‘do good’ are often associated with service oriented roles, non-profit work, philanthropy, etc., But those are only a few possibilities. Leaving this world better than you found it can be just about anything; leaving this world better than you found it could mean providing your family with firmer financial footing; leaving this world better than you found it could mean developing some innovative technology that meets a long overdue need, inspiring through art, entertaining, providing protective services, beautification. The possibilities really are endless!
And the good news is you get to design how you do it!!
It can be a full-time pursuit i.e., how you earn a living. It can be a side hustle. It can be a volunteer role. It can be centered on family. It can be multiple things at one time, It can change whenever you deem it necessary to change it. There’s a lot of freedom here. There really is no wrong direction to take. However, the design phase is the hardest part because what you should focus on may not be so clear. But don’t fret I’ve got you covered with my 3C Formula for designing your life purpose.
